In Youth Global Health Forum
As part of the Canadian youth delegate mandate, I hope to effectively and compassionately represent Canadian youth and the issues in global health that matter most to them. Thus, it is with this vision, that I ask you to please engage in the various opportunities listed here –– it is through these avenues that I hope to gain your guidance and assistance in establishing the priorities and recommendations for me to share with the Office of International Affairs for the Health Portfolio in advance of the WHA and the PAHO DC. Please use this space to share your ideas and insights on the following topic. You are welcome to share any thoughts you may have on this topic, as well as use the guiding questions to help formulate your response. Topic: Strategy for Building Resilient Health Systems and Post-COVID-19 Pandemic Recovery to Sustain and Protect Public Health Gains Guiding Questions: What are the critical components that must be considered when thinking about building resilient health systems and post-COVID-19 pandemic recovery to sustain and protect public health gains? From a Canadian youth lens, what priorities or key messages would you like to see reflected in Canada's statement on the topic of post-COVID-19 pandemic recovery? What are the systemic and structural deficiencies within health systems and emergency preparedness and response that have been exposed by the pandemic? In what ways can youth be involved in revitalizing and envisioning the health care system within the eventual post-COVID-19 pandemic recovery?

Topic: Reinvigorating Immunization as a Public Good for Universal Health Guiding Questions: From a Canadian youth lens, what priorities or key messages would you like to see reflected in Canada's statement on the topic of reinvigorating immunizations as a public good for universal health? What are the barriers and gaps within immunization programs? How can vaccine access be improved? In what ways can youth be involved in increasing immunization uptake? (e.g. tackling vaccine hesitancy, improving knowledge around vaccines, increasing vaccine equity)

Topic: Mental health preparedness for and response to the COVID-19 pandemic Guiding Questions: What are critical pieces to include in an international “mental health preparedness for and in response to the Covid-19 pandemic” resolution at the 73rd World Health Assembly (WHA)? How are youth’s mental health affected by the global pandemic? From a Canadian youth lens, what priorities/statements/commitments would you want to see reflected in a resolution document agreed upon at the WHA, on the topic of mental health amidst a pandemic? Who should be included in ‘vulnerable groups’ and ‘people in vulnerable situations’ (including populations in conflict-affected areas and settings prone to natural disasters) in the context of the pandemic and mental health? What role does youth play during a pandemic? COVID-19 pandemic –– how has it impacted you?

From a Canadian youth lens, what priorities/statements/commitments would you want to see reflected in a resolution document agreed upon at the WHA, on the topic of “Multisectoral response to address interpersonal violence against women and girls and against children”? What other intersecting identities should be considered in the resolution on “Multisectoral response to address interpersonal violence against women and girls and against children”? (e.g. lower SES, immigration status, refugee status)

Topic: Social Determinants of Health Guiding Questions: The WHO Constitution highlights “the need to focus not only on reducing disease, but also on tackling its root causes. This involves systematically addressing social, environmental and economic determinants of health” –– how are youth affected by these root causes? What other root causes contribute to one’s susceptibility to disease? What are critical pieces to include in the “Social Determinants of Health” resolution at the 73rd World Health Assembly (WHA)? From a Canadian youth lens, what priorities/statements/commitments would you want to see reflected in a resolution document agreed upon at the WHA, on the topic of “Social determinants of health”? Who should be included in ‘vulnerable groups’ and ‘people in vulnerable situations’ in the context of the pandemic and mental health? What implications does COVID-19 have on social determinants of health?
