Hello and Bonjour!
My name is Brie O’Sullivan (she/her), and I will be joining the 2022 Canadian Delegation to the 75th World Health Assembly (WHA) and 30th Pan American Sanitary Conference (PASC) as this year’s Canadian Youth Delegate. The WHA and PASC are governing bodies of the World Health Organization (WHO), with the WHA occurring annually and the PASC occurring every five years. Each conference is attended by a delegation of Canadian civil society representatives, including leaders and staff from the Office of International Affairs (Public Health Agency of Canada), Global Affairs Canada, and Health Canada.
As the Canadian Youth Delegate, I will act as a consultant, participant, and liaison to represent the voices and global health priorities of Canadian youth at these international conferences. It is my vision to inspire young leaders within our country to learn about and actively engage in health policy and programming at the national, international, and global levels. In the months leading up to the WHA and PASC, I will be sharing several opportunities for you to participate in establishing and providing guidance on our collective priorities. In addition, I encourage you to explore the various ways you can get involved through this webpage, such as joining our email list, signing up for roundtable discussions, and posting in the live forums!
I am looking forward to connecting with you and hearing your thoughts on important global health topics. Thank you sincerely for your time and input!
About the Canadian Youth Delegate Program
Each year the World Health Organization (WHO) holds the World Health Assembly (WHA) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) holds the Pan American Health Organization Directing Council (PAHO DC). Additionally, every 5 years, the PAHO holds the Pan American Sanitary Conference. The 75th World Health Assembly will take place in Spring 2022 and the 30th Pan American Sanitary Conference will take place in Autumn 2022. These meetings are some of the largest health policy setting events, as they bring together health ministers and health representatives from the 194 World Health Organization (WHO) member states for WHA, and the 35 Member States in the Americas region for the PAHO DC and PASC.
Each member country brings a delegation to the assembly to vote on key global health issues. The Government of Canada has had a youth delegate attend the WHA and PAHO DC, as a part of the Canadian delegation for the past 5 years. The Canadian Youth Delegate (CYD) offers a unique youth perspective on key health issues on the WHA, PAHO DC, and PASC agendas, which informs the development of Canada’s positions and engagement during these meetings. The CYD engages with youth advocates from across the country, as well as around the world, to gather their views and to keep them updated on the outcomes of these meetings.
